there are two verses inscribed on this vase :
“To a gazelle l had.
Oh gazelle!.
you always graze in my garden, lonely and dark-eyed like me: we are both alone with no maste.
Let us bear the sentence of fate patiently!”
by Qasmūna bint Ismail, a 12th-century Jewish poetess of al-Andalus—and one of the very few known female poets.

And
“You left me, oh gazelle!,
bound in the hands of misfortune.
Since you deserted me,
I have known no pleasure in sleep.”
by Ibn Zaydūn (1003 to 1070 CE) one of Andalusia’s most famous poets.

This vase is housed in the museum in Alhambra palace, Granada Spain.
Crafted in the time of Sultan Muhammad V (c. 1370–1380), the Vase of Gazelles, made possibly for the palace of Granada, is not merely a vessel, it is a lyrical fusion of art, poetry, and symbolism, representing the pinnacle of Nasrid ceramic craftsmanship in al-Andalus.

The vase’s elegance is as much technical as it is aesthetic. It reflects the remarkable advancement of ceramic techniques in the Islamic world: lusterware, intricate figuration, and cobalt blue overglaze set against earthy tones. The inscriptions and interlacing motifs echo architectural patterns, mirroring the refined synthesis of art and intellect that defined the Nasrid court

In poetry the characteristics of each animal are symbolic. Power and strength in the case of the lions, or the speed of the doves which act as messengers, while the delicate nature, speed and sweetness of gazelles in poetry have been used to symbolise the soul, the lover or longing for the lover.
From the fine curves of the calligraphy to the rhythmic symmetry of vegetal motifs, every detail of this vase speaks to a world where beauty was divine, and even the everyday object could become a vehicle for transcendence.

As we behold this masterpiece today, we see not just a vase, but an entire world contained in clay, pigment, and poetry.

Tedhi Qabr
Come ashoor or 10th Muharram and Sham-e Gariban majlises are held across the world.
While the hadith in the majlis, though centring around the events of the 10th of Ashur in Karbala, will differ according to the Maulana reciting it, one thing remains standard: every majlis will end with the iconic and evocative nauha ghabrayegi Zainab.
This nauha has the power to make tears fall from even the most hardened soul.
This year i was determined to go and pay my respects and recite a fatiha at the grave of Channu Lal who wrote this nauha. He wrote under the takhallus of Dilgir.
Thanks to Taha Ahmad and Sabika Abbas i went there.
It’s called ‘tedhi qabr’ or crooked grave because it is not in alignment with the road running next to it.
As many would know a qabr/grave of a Muslim has to be perpendicular to the direction of the Qibla, this here the direction is tilted & not perpendicular to the road.
Channu Lal (1780 – 1848 CE)and his brother Raja Jhau Lal were courtiers of Nawab Asaf-ud-Daula. Brought up on the ethos of nawabi tehzeeb, Channu Lal was an accomplished marsiya nigar and poet.
Mirza Khani Nawazish was his first ustad and Nasikh was his second ustad.
The nondescript grave is in middle of the chidiya market of Nakkhas and there are shops on one side of it.
I spoke to a few shopkeepers and requested them to keep it in a good condition.
Due to a lisp he himself could not recite hos nauhas, but today the world is hos voice.
Request a surah e fatiha for Dilgir

Shayad issi ka naam hai muhabbat Shefta
Ek aag si hai seene ke andar lagi huyi
Perhaps this is what is called love Shefta
A fire, which is lit inside my chest
Mustafa Ali Khan Shefta

Nawab Mustafa Ali Khan Shefta (1809-1869 AD), was a famous poet and critic. He was a contemporary of Mirza Ghalib.
Like the majority of Muslim nobility he was arrested by the British in connection with the Uprising of 1857. He had close ties with the Mughal Emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar.
However, unlike the more unfortunate ones from Kucha Chelan, such as Imam Baksh Sehbai he escaped execution and was sentenced to seven years imprisonment and his estates were seized, only half of which were later restored on appeal.
Later, his son Nawab Ishaq Khan bought the prison and built their family home on it.

Shefta died in 1869 at his house in Kucha Chelaan in Delh and was buried at his family graveyard at Hazrat Nizamuddin.
He belonged to the famous Bangash family and was buried in their family graveyard which was very close to the Loharu graveyard.
He was a close friend of Mirza Ghalib who stood by him in his hour of need and it’s fitting that they sleep their eternal sleep near each other. Unfortunately, heavy construction in the twentieth century has resulted in many changes and since no headstone or marker indicates his grave, we don’t know which one it is.
Whenever i go to Chausath Khamba i just recite a fatiha for all the souls there.
As per my understanding the Bangash family graveyard is behind Chausath Khamba. That area has many graves.
Ghalib’s tomb is separated from the Chausath Khamba by a wall.

The famous poet Dabir-ul-Mulk, Najm-ud-Daula Mirza Asadullah Khan Ghalib was born on 27 December 1797 and witnessed the first war of Indian independence and the end of the Mughal Empire.
There are many stories about his life I share one here.
He led a very hard life and
was perpetually in debt and fought for his pension, but his wit remained intact. Writing about his pension, Mirza Ghalib said:

“Miyan be-rizq jeene ka mujhko dhab aa gaya
Iss taraf se khatir jamaa rakhna”
Miyan I have got used to living in a state of penury.
Be rest assured from my side.
And
“Ramzan ka maheena roze khaa khaa kar kataa. Khuda Razzaq hai, kuch aur khaane ko na mila to gham to hai!”
In the month of Ramzan, I lived by fasting and God is Bounteous and if nothing else, at least there is sorrow.’

He died on 15 February 1869 AD. He was buried near the Dargah of Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya in the graveyard belonging to the Nawabs of Loharu to whom he was related to via his mother and wife’s family. It was a very simple grave ( image1) and only recognizable as the grave of a great poet because of the inscription on it:

1. Munshi Mohammed Ali Tashnah was an eccentric poet in Ghalib’s era who came to mushairas in a state of inebriety as well as nudity. Of all the poets present in #DilliKaAakhiriShama he was the only one who had a sense of things to come in 1845.

Aankh padti hai kahin, paanv kahin padta hai
Sab ki hai tumko khabar, apni khabar kuchh bhi nahin

Ai humnasheen woh Hazrat Mahir hi naa hon kahin
Ek paarsa suna hai mai khwaar ho gaya

3.Once this impious idol worshipper had laid claims to divinity,
Now that he has come to his senses, he has recovered his humanity

تم میرے پاس ہوتے ہو گویا
جب کوئی دوسرا نہیں ہوتا

Tum mērē paas hotey hō gōyā
Jab kō’ī dūsrā nahin hota

The grave of one of the finest Urdu poets, Momin Khan Momin (1800–14 May 1852) is in the #Mehdiyan cemetery opposite Maulana Azad Medical College.

I read about it and decided set off to find it and recite a fatiha. The compound which was once a premier Delhi area is now a dhobi ghat with clothes spread out to dry after washing. Encroachment is everywhere.

This is also the compound of the mazar of the famous Sufi saint Shah Waliullah and some members of his family.

That compound has many graves. Just outside the saints mazar is the grave of Hakim Momin Khan Momin. I had to look for it amongst all the others.

We are lucky it has survived.

At some point in the 1960s unscrupulous builders decided to bulldozer the area. They leveled the hilly ground around it.
A devoted fan of Momin Sher Ali Mewati came to know of it and came to Delhi from #Mewat.
He lay down in front of the bulldozer but it didn’t work.
Next he went and lay down on the road opposite Teen Murti house just as #Nehru was being driven out.
Those were the days. He wasn’t arrested instead Nehru ji got down from his car and asked for an explanation.
He was very upset and immediately drove to the spot with Sher Ali Mewati.
He gave orders to stop demolition.

Poetry has been a powerful medium of expression, be it for conveying love or disappointment, for spreading general cheer, or for voicing dissent. In 1959, a year after General Ayub Khan (the second president of Pakistan) had imposed martial law on Pakistan and the state machinery was bowing to his rules, radio waves were under his control and rosy pictures of the country were being painted, a young man participating in a mushaira that was aired live from Rawalpindi studio of Pakistan Broadcasting Corporation voiced his dissent against military dictatorship in his country.
Kahin gas ka dhuan hai kahin goliyo’n ki barish
Shab-e-ahd-e-kamnigahi tujhe kis tarah sarahe’n
The air is thick with teargas and the sound of raining bullets
How can I praise thee O night of the era of short sightedness
The mushaira had to be taken off air. That man was Habib Jalib (1928-1993), who had migrated from India to Pakistan with his family during Partition. He had been educated in Delhi at the Anglo-Arabic School and had taken his penname from Jalib Dehlvi. Jalib means “attractive”.
In 1962, when Ayub Khan enforced his constitution upon Pakistan’s people, Jalib wrote his famous poem Dastoor (Constitution):
deep jis ka mahallat hi mein jale
chand logo’n ki Khushiyo’n ko le kar chale
wo jo saye mein har maslahat ke pale
aise dastur ko subh-e-be-nur ko
main nahin manta main nahin jaanta
That which only lights up palaces
That which only takes the happiness of a few into account
That which is nurtured in the shade of compromise
That constitution of a dark dawn
I do not accept, I do not recognise
Not surprisingly, he spent many years in jail, first under the regime of Ayub Khan, then under General Zia ul Haq’s government. However, his revolutionary fervour wasn’t dimmed. The people’s poet, as he was called, continued fighting for his principles, for his right to speak and for his people against repressive regimes and the stranglehold of capitalism and religion over his country.
He used his pen to support Fatima Jinnah, who stood for presidential elections against General Yahya Khan in 1964, and her rallies drew large crowds. She didn’t succeed, but his verses remain undefeated even today. There’s a famous anecdote about a time when he was imprisoned and the jailor taunted him saying he will ensure he is deprived of pen and paper.
Habib Jalib famously said that he would recite it before the guard, who would then recite it before the town square, before the people of Lahore. Another military ruler, General Yahya Khan (the third president of Pakistan), succeeded Ayub Khan as head of state. At a mushaira in Muree, Habib Jalib looked at the general’s photograph, which was prominently displayed, and recited one of his iconic verses:
Tum se pehle woh jo ik shakhs yahan takht nasheen tha
Us ko bhi apne khuda honay pe itna hi yaqeen tha
The one who was enthroned before you
He too was convinced he is God.
Later, under Zai ul Haq’s regime, he wrote his famous nazm:
zulmat ko ziya sarsar ko saba bande ko Khuda kya likhna
patthar ko guhar diwar ko dar kargas ko huma kya likhna
How can I describe darkness as light, a storm as a zephyr or a man as God?
How can I describe a stone as a gem, a wall as a door or a vulture as a phoenix?
His fight was against dictatorship, against authoritarian regime. He criticised Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto and his daughter Benazir Bhutto for their anti-people policies. His fight was against injustice of every kind, and the clergymen — who he felt were busy misleading people in the name of religion — got a tongue-lashing in verse too:
Bahut mein ne suni hai aap ki taqreer Maulana
Magar badli nahin ab tak meri taqdeer Maulana
Khudara Shukr ki talqeen apne pass hi rakhen
Yeh lagti hai mere seene pe ban kar teeer Maulana
I’ve heard your speeches long enough, Maulana,
But there’s still no change in my fate, Maulana
For God’s sake keep your preachings of gratefulness to yourself
They pierce my heart like an arrow, Maulana
Since time immemorial, religion has been used as a tool to legitimise dictatorship and Jalib led the fight against it from the forefront. Those who think religion is in danger, would do well to read his verse:
Khatra hai zar daron ko
Girti hui diwaron ko
Sadiyon ke bimaron ko
Khatre mein Islam nahin
Sari zamin ko ghere hue hain aakhir chand gharane kyon
Naam nabi ka lene wale ulfat se begane kyon
The rich landlords are endangered
Crumbling walls are endangered
Revolting customs perpetuated on people [in name of religion] for centuries are endangered
Islam is not in danger
Why is our wealth concentrated in the hands of a few families?
Why are those who love the prophet bereft of joy?
When the slogan “Pakistan ka matlab kia, La Ilaha Illilah” was used to combat Pakistan Peoples Party under Zulfiqar Ali bhutto, Jalib responded with:
Khet wadero’n se le lo, mille’n lootero’n se le lo
Koi rahe na Aali-jah,
Pakistan ka matlab kia, La Ilaha Illilah’
Take the land away from the landlords, take the mills from the exploiters,
No one should remain a priveleged lot
That’s the real meaning of Pakistan, La Ilaha Illilah’
Jalib died on March 12, 1993 and his verses are still as popular the world over. Perhaps, every democratic country facing a challenge to its democracy, liberty and freedom needs such a poet.

Bagh e Bedil

Abdul Qadir Bedil (1642-1720) is considered as one of the prominent poets of Indian School of Poetry in Persian literature, and both Mirza Ghalib and Allama Iqbal were influenced by his unique style.
The Bagh e Bedil is popularly believed to be the tomb of the famous poet and mystic Bedil. However, there have been doubts raised over it.
One fact that is mentioned by many scholars of Bedil is the absence of any mention of his tomb by Sir Syed Ahmad Khan in Asar-us-Sanadid as well as by Maulvi basheeruddin Ahmed in Waqeat-e Darul Hukumat Dehli. Though the poet’s urs was celebrated for many years after his passing away by the time Sir Syed was writing Asar, traces of the tomb must have vanished.
Some of it the oral history, regarding the present tomb was related to me in 2016-17 by Janab Mohammad Misbah the caretaker of the Dargah of Sheikh Nuruddin Malik Yaar e Parra’n.
Janab Mohammad Misbah saheb said that as per history Bedil was buried in a place chosen by him earlier in the haveli where he lived. This is proven by Urdu texts from that and later era.( ‘Nikat-e-Bedil’ published by Attaullah). This then led me to research and I found Dr. Abdul Ghani’s book ‘Life And Works Of Abdul Qadir Bedil’.
Dr. Abdul Ghani corroborates this in the book.
He says that the house of the poet Bedil was on the banks of the river Yamuna in Shahjahanabad, as stated by Hussain Quli Khan is Nishtar e Ishq. Khushgo, his disciple also confirms that it is outside the Delhi Gate and in its neighbourhood. The present tomb is at a distance of three km from the Delhi gate.
The present tomb is in the complex of Dargah of Sheikh Nuruddin Malik Yaar e Parra’n and opposite the dargah of Matka Shah, yet as Dr. Ghani says, Khushgo nor Husain Quli Khan make any reference to these two very popular 13th century saints.
Dr. Ghani goes on to write:
[Bedil] was down with typhoid fever towards the end of Muharram 1133 AH (Nov. 1720). After four or five days the fever disappeared, and, thinking that he had recovered, Bedil took a bath on the 2nd of Safar 1133 AH (December 3, 1720). On Wednesday the 3rd of Safar there was a relapse of fever, which remained for the whole of the night. Nawab Ghairat Khan Bahadur4 … was with him for the whole of the night. Sometimes Bedil swooned, and then came to himself. When he regained senses, he would burst into laughter involuntarily. The hopes of recovery waned at last, and at dawn the condition changed horribly. It was Thursday, 4th Safar 1133 AH (December 5, 1720) when six gharis had passed after sunrise, the Bedil’s soul winged its way to Heaven. His sacred remains were buried in the courtyard of his house, on the bank of the river Jamna, at the place specified by himself.5
Dr Ghani’s statement is based on Maarif, a book by Bindaban Das ‘Khushgo’, a most ardent admirer of Bedil who was living in Delhi at the same time Bedil.
Khushgo also says that the poet was buried in a grave dug into a chabutra that Bedil had got built for that very purpose ten years earlier.
Alas! Bedil concealed his face from this world!
That pure jewel sleeps under the earth
When Khushgo asked his intellect for the chronogram It said ‘Mirza Bedil departed from this world6
“Bedil don’t be a black spot for the mourner, a trouble for his parched throat, Die on the dust and in the same manner be carried by the winds. Your
death is light, don’t be a burden for any shoulder”
The present location was fixed upon by Khwaja Hasan Nizami who translated Dargah Quli Khan’s book Muraqqa e Dehli from Persian. Since Bedil’s tomb was mentioned in it but no one knew of its exact location he published a query in the magazine where the translation appeared. A Maulana Shah Sulaiman Sahib of Phulwari replied saying that the tomb was in front of e-Parra’n. Khwaja Hasan Nizami went visited the site and though he didn’t find any vestiges of the tomb he discovered the site. He requested Nizam Asif Jah VII for help and the latter sent Rs. 2,000 and the tomb with a marble tombstone and low enclosure of bricks was built. [Dr.Ghani]

Qutub Quli Khan is a very respected Urdu poet and said to be a pioneer of Urdu ghazals. The female voice in their ghazals was really feminine, soft and gentle. It talked of separation or union but in genteel tones. Not like the full-bodied longings and conversations that the Lucknow-Delhi Rekhti explored.

For example Qutub Quli khan writes:

Sheikh Muhammad Ibrahim Zauq was a noted Urdu poet . He wrote poetry under nom de plume “Zauq”, and was appointed poet laureate of the Mughal Court in Delhi. He was a poor youth, with only ordinary education, who went on to acquire quite some learning in history, tradition and astrology in his later years. Zauq was a prominent contemporary of Ghalib and in the history of Urdu poetry the rivalry of the two poets is quite well known. During his lifetime Zauq was more popular than Ghalib for the critical values in those days were mainly confined to judging a piece of poetry on the basis of usage of words, phrases and idioms. Content and style were barely taken into account while appreciating poetry

Since Bahadur Shah Zafar was fond of using simple and colloquial diction, Zauq too composed his ghazals using simple words, phrases of everyday use and similes rooted in the common culture. His ghazals are also notable for their spontaneity. Zauq was a deeply religious man. In his ghazals too he would deal with religious and ethical themes. Therefore, his ghazals lack lyricism and appear to be the verses of a preacher.

A Major portion of Zauq’s poetical output got lost because mutiny of 1857. Maulana Mohammed Husain Azad compiled a slim volume of his poetry with the help of his pupils like Hafiz, Veeran, Anwar and Zaheer that contains twelve hundred couplets of Ghazals and fifteen Eulogies. Even though much of his work was lost, he left behind a legacy of ghazal, qasida, and mukhammas

Son of an ordinary soldier in the Mughal army , Zauq was sent to a maktab (elementary religious school) that was run by Hafiz Ghulam Rasool. Hafiz himself was a poet and used Shauq as his nom de plume. Under his influence the young Mohammed Ibrahim also got attracted towards poetry. Hafiz provided the required encouragement, took him as his pupil in poetry too and suggested Zauq as his nom de plume. Though Zauq could not complete the course of the maktab, he got hooked to poetry. In those days Shah Naseer was the most famous master poet of Delhi. Zauq began showing his ghazals to Shah Naseer for improvement. Naseer recognized the natural talent and made him his pupil. Gradually, Zauq began participating in the mushairas. His natural bent of mind towards poetry coupled with his singular obsession to excel in the pursuit brought him fame and fortune. He would be better appreciated in the mushairas than his mentor. Shah Naseer got very annoyed with the growing popularity of Zauq. He threw him out of the group of his pupils. Zauq, thereafter, relied only on his talent and continued writing poetry with a vengeance.

Another poet, Meer Kazim Husain Beqarar, a friend of Zauq’s was appointed the mentor of the Crown Prince Zafar, who later ascended the throne. Through him Zauq could got the chance to enter the royal court. He also started participating in the royal mushairas. When Beqarar took up the job of Meer Munshi (Head Clerk) in the Office of John Elphinstone, Crown Prince Zafar appointed Zauq as his mentor with a monthly salary of Rs. 4- that was ultimately raised to Rs. 100- when Bahadur Shah Zafar ascended the throne. He remained the poet laureate of the Mughal Court till his death in 1854.

Shama hai, gul bhi hai, bulbul bhi hai, parwana bhi

Raat ki raat yeh sab kuch hai, sehar kuchh bhi nahin

Hashr ki dhoom hai, sab kahte hain yun hai, yun hai

Fitna hai ek teri thokar ka , magar kuchh bhi nahin

Nesti ki hai mujhe koocha e hasti mein talaash,

Saer karta hun udhar ki jidhar kuchh bhi nahin

Ek ansoo bhi asar jab na kare Tashnah

Fayda rone se ai deeda e tar kuchh bhi nahin , kuchh bhi nahin

( reciting this Tashna abruptly got up and left the mushaira repeating kuchh bhi nahin kuchh bhi nahin )
