Now a protected ASI monument, the Residency was built for the British Resident by Nawab Asafuddaula (started 1775) and the complex finished in 1800 by Nawab Sadat Ali Khan.

As a child I would often go there as we stayed very close to it. We would enter from the cemetery side and be shocked and awed by the story of The women and children who were besieged there. I don’t remember much of those stories or even how authentic they were but I can still feel the goose bumps I felt then on being told of the plight of the women and children who had fled to the tahkhana for safety. The sight of bullet and shot marks of course brought the sense of horror, close.

I remember the Begum Kothi which was built by Nawab Asafuddaula and subsequently sold to Sacville Marcus Taylor the Asst Resident who in turn sold it to Pandergast. This was later sold to John Culloden.
Nawab Nasiruddin Haider was married to a granddaughter of CullOden known as Wilayti Begum and entitled Maqdarah e Aliya. After the Nawab’s death the Wilayti Begum came to live with her mother Mrs Whearty in the Residency. Her mother and step sister Ashraf un Nisa came to stay with her. Both Wilayti Begum and her mother are buried in the compound of Begum Kothi.

Since Wilayti Begum had no issue her property was divided between her step brother, Joseph Walter’s known as Ameer Mirza and sister. The step sister got the Begum Kothi.
As a thanksgiving Ashraf un Nisa built a beautiful mosque and Imambara. I don’t know why as a child I never noticed them. Probably because they were far off from where we entered.

The Imambara is now roof less but it’s arches and arcades are still decorated with stucco. There’s a heavy smell of incense and I could see a Chad or and flowers beyond the iron railings and locked door.
I know that on shab e Ashur some of my friends go and do chiraghan there.

The mosque is very pretty and has an unusual dome finial.
It was also locked so I couldn’t go in and I don’t know if it’s functioning or not.

Arsh Ali adds: Yes… it’s working….and every Friday, at 4 p.m., i.e., after the munajaat of Ghaar ki Karbala, a Hadith-e-Kisa and munajaat program take place in this mosque which is followed by an alam procession which starts from the mosque and culminating at the Imambada. Many people witness this.

But in Jalali it’s still known as Deputy saheb ka Imambara 

Perhaps because he was the first to reach a high govt position in a village of rich jagirdars.

Moharrum was a very important event in our lives and still is. Everyone goes to their villages for it. I go to my sasural now that’s why haven’t been here for so many years. 

We stayed in these rooms on the roof. And it’s here that every ashoor we would do the amaal e ashoora recited by Dadi. So many memories come flooding in .

All of sisters, cousins, aunts, uncles, Amma and Baba.

When we went for majlis we would cross this Haveli and go through this chatta 

Jalali was established by Jalaluddin Khilji in reign of Balban. A plaque on the Jama Masjid stating the fact.

Bet 1628-1658) descendants of Shah-e-Hamdan Ameer Kabir Sayyid Ali Hamdani, (our ancestors) came & settled in Jalali

Sayyid Kamaluddin Hamadani, was the first Sayyid to migrate and settle down in Jalali. He then got married to the daughter of Qazi of Jalali.

Two more domes were built by Haji Mehdi Ali who also added a golden kalas on top of each. An account of the contributions of Haji Mehdi Ali is engraved in Persian on the marble stone which forms part of the middle arch of the mosque.

अगर हर एक पत्थर  जुबां बन जाए तो ना जाने हमें क्या क्या खूबसूरत पल, दरदनाक वाक़िये  और  रूमानी क़िस्से सुन ने को मिले |

मैं ने जब दिल्ली वापस आने का फैसला लिया तो  उस में बहुत बड़ा हाथ था मेरी चाहत अपनी विरासत के लिये।

स्कूल के दिनों से शौक़ था पुराणी इमारतें देखने का उन में घूम ने का और यह सोचना के यहाँ क्या क्या गुज़र गया होगा।

बचपन लखनऊ में गुज़रा और रेजीडेंसी घर के बहुत क़रीब थी तो अक्सर जाना होता ट वहाँ  १८५७ के मंज़र अक्सर दिल ओ दिमाग़ पे छा जाते थे , और ख्याल आते थे कि उन् दिनों अंग्रेज़ों पर और हिन्दुस्तानियों पर क्या गुज़री हो गी.

ऐसी ही कहानिया सुन ने के लिए मैं आज कल दिल्ली कि ख़ाक छान टी हूँ और कभी ख़ुशी कभी ग़म के आंसू बहती हूँ ।

मैंने कई मुल्कों कि सैर की है और वहाँ के मक़बरे, कलीसा और महल केख़ज़ानों से आँखें सेर की हैं । कोई जवाब नहीं है यूरोप के कालेसों  का । मक़बरों में भी किस शान से लोग सोते हैँ : और एक हम हैं ना खुद चैन की नींद सोते हैं ना मरे हुवों को सोने देते हैं ।

आज काफी मक़बरों के चारों तरफ घर बन गए है, मस्जिदें वीरान पड़ी हैं और उन में नमाज़ तो दूर कूड़े का ढेर हैं |

ऐसे ही एक मस्जिद मुझे दिल्ली ले पहाड़गंज में मिली|

यह नबी करीम पुलिस थाणे के सामने है|

ढाँचे को देख कर आप यह बिलकुल नहीं कह सकते के यहाँ कभी खुदा का नाम भी लिया गया होगा।

इस मस्जिद कि खासियत यह थी के यह एक वाहिद मस्जिद है जो कम अस कम मैंने देखी है जो ‘यू-शेप्ड” है|

इसको किस्ने बनवाया और क्यूँ इस तरतीब से बनवाया नहीं मिला मुझे किसी भी पुरानी तारिख कि किताब मे| क़दम शरीफ कि दरगाह से नज़दीकी कि वजह से मुझे लगता है यह इलाक़ा काफी मशूर रहा होगा और यहाँ ज़ायरीन काफी आते होंगे| कुछ लोगो़ का मान ना है कि यह िफरोज़ शाह के मशहूर वज़ीर ितिलगाना िक बनानाई हुई ७ मस्िजदो़़ मे़ से एक है लेिकन इसका कोई ठोस सबूत नही िमलता । उनकी बनवाई गई मस्िजद मे़ बेगमपुर और िखणकी बहुत मशहू और मारूफ है़। अगर यह भी उनकी । ७ मस्िजदो़ मे से एक होती तो इसका ज़िक् ज़रूर मिलता।यह मस्जिद शायद लोदी बादशाहों के ज़माने कि है।

सदियों की तारीक खंडर में

जब आवाज़ लगाता  है

ला महदूद खला के लैब पर

खामोशी बन जाता है

अंधेरों में खंडर सोता पड़ा है	अबाबीलों के लश्कर जागते है

बीच के हिस्से मैं मलबा मिटटी और गन्दगी हमारी लापरवाही कि गवाही देती है

दर  ओ दीवार  हसरत से नज़र डालते हैं	कभी हमने भी देखि है शान ए  करीमी

कभी यहाँ झुकते थे सर खुदा के सामने

आज झुकते हैं शर्म से अपनी लापरवाही पर

जब कहीं सर छुपाने को घर ना मिला तो खुदा का घर ही काम आया

अब इसका दायी तरफ  का हिस्सा तो  काफी हद्द तक गिर गया है और बायीं तरफ के हिस्से पर किसी का क़ब्ज़ा है।  बीच के हिस्से मैं मलबा मिटटी और गन्दगी हमारी लापरवाही कि गवाही देती है

यह शायद कभी इस मस्जिद में आने का एक रास्ता था अब एक साइकिल कि दूकान है

जहाँ एक तरफ लाखों का हुजूम हमारी इन इमारतों को देखने के लिए दुनिया भर से आता है वहीँ दूसरी तरफ हम खुद इनकी हिफाज़त नहीं करते।

आखिर कार अपनी विरासत कि हिफाज़त करना हमारा काम है|

कुछ काम  तमाम किया  हमारी लालच, लाचारी ने और कुछ १९४७ के बाद इमारतों की  ला वारिसी ने अंजाम दिया|

Can you imagine my delight when last week on my visit to this area I saw a wonderful sight.

At first I didn’t realise it was this same place but Syed Mohamamd Qasim who was with me kept insisting it was.

To my surprise I realised it was.

It used to be an Imambara as per the board there and there are references to imambara which was converted intoa hospital for infectious diseases by the British.

Was a cycle shop the last time I saw it. Now a proper gateway

one thing remains constant and that is illegal occupation. Though the occupant has changed. This laundryman came here 2 years ago when the monument was restored. The old one has gone to some other monument

But the heart was gladdened to see that when we want we can restore our heritage.
