<p>One of the highlights of the Neelkanth Temple in Kalinjar Fort is a 24 feet rock cut sculpture of Lord Shiva as Kal Bhairav.<br>It is situated in a small kund/reservoir called Swarg Rohina in a rock cut recess<br>this sculpture of Kal Bhairava is 24 feet in height and stands in water. The levels of water now depend on the weather as the kund has dried up.<br>The sculpture is 17 feet broad.<br>It is mentioned by Abul Fazl as being 18 cubits in height.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="794" height="1024" data-attachment-id="37568" data-permalink="https://ranasafvi.com/kal-bhairava-in-kalinjar-fort/img_1618/" data-orig-file="https://ranasafvi.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/img_1618.jpg" data-orig-size="1125,1451" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;orientation&quot;:&quot;1&quot;}" data-image-title="img_1618" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="" data-medium-file="https://ranasafvi.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/img_1618-233x300.jpg" data-large-file="https://i0.wp.com/ranasafvi.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/img_1618.jpg?resize=794%2C1024&#038;ssl=1" src="https://i0.wp.com/ranasafvi.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/img_1618.jpg?resize=794%2C1024&#038;ssl=1" alt="" class="wp-image-37568" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/ranasafvi.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/img_1618.jpg?resize=794%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 794w, https://i0.wp.com/ranasafvi.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/img_1618.jpg?resize=233%2C300&amp;ssl=1 233w, https://i0.wp.com/ranasafvi.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/img_1618.jpg?resize=768%2C991&amp;ssl=1 768w, https://i0.wp.com/ranasafvi.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/img_1618.jpg?w=1125&amp;ssl=1 1125w" sizes="(max-width: 794px) 100vw, 794px" data-recalc-dims="1" /></figure>

<p></p>

<p>The figure has 18 arms, and is ornamented with the usual garland of skulls, with snake earrings and snake armlets, and a serpent twined round the neck. In the hands are various objects, of which the most prominent are a sword, a bowl of blood.<br />Beside this statue there is a figure of Bhairavi, 4 feet in height, which is carved higher up.</p>

<p>Kal Bhairava is the dark and frightful aspect of Lord Shiva.<br />There are 64 bhairavas who fall under 8 categories.<br />Each is supposed to protect and control the 8 directions of the universe.<br />They are known as Ashtanga Bhairavas.<br />An interpretation of the word bhairava is<br />That &#8220;Bha&#8221; stands for creation, &#8220;Ra&#8221; for preservation and &#8220;Va&#8221; for destruction.<br />Thus, Bhairava, combines all of these forces of the Universe.<br />Kal Bhairava&#8217;s consort is Bhairavi, the terrible aspect of Parvati.</p>
