On the night of 17th September, 1857 the emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar left the Red Fort using the khizri gate seen in this painting by boat. He knew the British were baying for his blood and wanted to prevent bloodshed of his children as he called the residents of Shahjahanabad
He went by boat to the dargah of Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya and then later to Humayun’s tomb.‬

Last prayer of Bahadur Shah Zafar, before leaving Qila as recorded in Begumat ke Aansoo : “Khuda, Hindustan ke Hindu Mussalman mere bachhe hain. Inki hifazat karna mere amal ( karm) ki saza inhe Na mile angrezon ke haath ” in 1857 after fall of Delhi
Related by his daughter Kulsum Zamani Begum who saw him praying on his musalla the night he left it.
