In The Print India

Forgotten Cities of Delhi blends the historical facts behind each ‘hidden-in-plain-sight’ structure with anecdotes, legend and Sufi couplets.

Na Sikandar hai na Dara hai na Qaiser na Jam

Be-mahal khaak mein hain qasr banane waale

(Neither Alexander, nor Darius, nor Caesar or Jamshed remain

The builders of palaces under the open skies in dust) are lain

– Barq Mirza Raza

A passionate new book detailing Delhi’s ancient but forgotten forts, tombs, baolis is an obvious labour of love. But the real magic happens when you read finely curated Sufi couplets along with the descriptions of the historical structures.

Historian and translator Rana Safvi’s The Forgotten Cities of Delhi is a handy addition to the popular literature on the capital’s richly layered, 1,500-year history.

The tombs, forts, baolis, walls, and shrines of Delhi’s ancient cities, where kings, poets, and mystics walked are now silent and often careworn witnesses to traffic and manic ‘development’.

Sections divided on the geography map these ancient cities now spread across modern India’s capital, with each segment listing a large number of surviving structures. The Forgotten Cities blends the historical facts behind each listed structure with anecdotes and legend. There are detailed, yet simple explanations of the architectural styles and traditions that prevailed during each historical period, starting with the Tomar dynasty in the 10th century, through the Muslim-rule era of the Khiljis, Tughlaqs, and Lodis and on to three centuries of Mughal domination – a vast canvas.

Adding charm to the descriptions of various historical structures are finely curated Sufi couplets. Be it the one quoted above on Firoz Shah Kotla or another that appears to foretell the fate of the once impressive Khirki Masjid:

Woh masjid ghar na ban jaaye kisi ka

Namaaze’n band hain khaali padi hai

(Alas! That mosque may become someone’s residence

No longer are prayers held there, what echoes there is silence)

– Sardar Asif

But The Forgotten Cities isn’t merely a nostalgic ode to the national capital’s past. Safvi’s straight-bat style, part documentary and part plea for the preservation of Delhi’s legacy points to the general apathy of the powers that be and its citizenry towards this priceless heritage.

UNESCO honours be damned, centuries old structures have been swallowed up by deathly dull stacks of concrete. Elsewhere, the palaces of former kings now offer dingy shelter to feckless youths who gamble and smoke up with happy abandon in these lost spaces.

This sad state of affairs notwithstanding, Safvi’s own adventurous spirit and her concise documentation of innumerable, lesser-known heritage structures make for inspired reading. And a call for action, too. There’s a nice, ‘carry along’ feel to the book. So, on a sunny weekend, tuck a copy in your backpack, lace up those walking shoes and set out to discover Delhi’s historical treasures. They’re hiding in plain sight.

A historian brings alive the landscape of old Delhi by recounting oral traditions around monuments and their prevalent narratives

DhūñD ujDe hue logoñ meñ vafā ke motī

ye khazāne tujhe mumkin hai kharāboñ meñ mileñ

Look for the pearls of fidelity among uprooted folk

It is possible you find these treasures amidst ruins

– Faraz Ahmed “Faraz”

It is only appropriate to begin the review of Rana Safvi’s remarkable book, The Forgotten Cities of Delhi, with a sh‘er, because her book is so full of poetry. Her entry on each monument she covers, and there are several hundred of them, is prefaced by a couplet or a stanza, mostly in Urdu, many by the best of contemporary Urdu poets. If this seems unusual for a book on the monuments of Delhi, this is because it is. Most of the extensive literature in English on the monuments of Delhi tends towards the prosaic, drawing on Western (specifically British) antiquarian traditions of looking at monuments from a visual, art-historical perspective, as objects of a tourist’s gaze. Safvi’s book, on the other hand, draws on the Urdu tradition of writing about the material remains of Delhi’s past, especially on Bashiruddin Ahmad’s remarkable Waqiat-e Dar-ul-Hukumat Delhi.

Recording a destruction

Bashiruddin Ahmad’s magisterial book was written and published almost exactly a century ago, in 1919, when the landscape of Delhi was being transformed rapidly — and undemocratically, with much public unrest — by the construction of British New Delhi. In the face of this destruction, Bashiruddin Ahmad wrote a book very different in content and spirit than Sir Syed Ahmad Khan’s famous Asar-us-Sanadid.

Not only did his three volumes cover far more buildings, documenting everything for posterity before it vanished, the spirit in which they were written about was very different. Bashiruddin Ahmad liberally used Persian and Urdu poetry to frame his descriptions of the monuments he wrote about, thus foregrounding an emotional connection to the monuments he was describing, enlivening these monuments for the reader.

Rana Safvi does the same, though her selections of poetry are quite different. And like in Bashiruddin Ahmad’s book, the landscape of historical Delhi that she describes is one that is alive.

Writing about the Tohfewala Gumbad in Deer Park, for instance, Safvi notes, “I visited it soon after Holi and there was colour on the graves. It’s the custom of the locals to go and offer colour at mazars as they consider them peers, patron saints.” The book is full of moments like this, moments in which the continuing significance of these monuments for the local communities around them is plainly stated. Safvi also recounts many oral traditions around several of these monuments, histories prevalent among local communities, which do not appear in any other comparable work on the monuments of Delhi. This approach to these monuments as living spaces can also be found in Syed Mohammad Qasim’s lovely photographs, which liberally illustrate this book. In many of these photos we see the monuments not in isolation, but foregrounded by the people, animals, and everyday objects whose lives are intertwined with these buildings. And like Bashiruddin Ahmad, Safvi does not shy away from writing of Delhi’s historical landscape as also a sacred landscape, a landscape of continuing devotion at temples, mosques and dargahs. In several places in the book, Safvi shares her own spiritual relation to the historical landscape of Delhi. For instance, when writing about the Dargah of Bibi Fatima Sam in Kakanagar, “It is said that Bibi always answers the prayers of a mother and I go there often to pray, especially for my children.”

An act of devotion

To write about the historical landscape of Delhi as also a landscape of devotion is a radical act, especially given how “secular” conservation policies have dominated the ASI’s approach to Delhi’s landscape, and worship has been actively prevented in many of Delhi’s historical mosques and tombs after Partition. This secular conservation paradigm has not only not succeeded in preserving this historical landscape — hundreds of monuments have disappeared or been encroached upon in Delhi since independence — it has also led to growing public apathy about built heritage.

In the book, Safvi doggedly traces many historical monuments which have been encroached upon and turned into toilets and trash heaps, especially in some of the “urban villages” of south Delhi. I cannot imagine such a fate happening to these monuments if they were still considered sacred spaces. Safvi’s book is an invitation for us to change the public conservation about conservation and Delhi’s built heritage.

Given the importance of this book and its achievements, I would argue for a better organisation and layout for future editions of the book, particularly the sequence in which buildings are presented. The section on Siri, for instance, encompasses buildings which range chronologically from the 13th century to the 16th, and geographically from Adhchini (near Mehrauli) to Kaka Nagar (near Mathura Road and the Purana Qila). This is a huge area, and there seems to be no clear principle as to why the monuments are organised in this particular order. Bashiruddin Ahmed wrote his book imagined as guiding the viewer through a series of expeditions with Shahjahanabad serving as a central point of reference.

In contemporary Delhi, of course, such a unitary centre is hard to imagine. A map or a series of maps would have been extraordinarily helpful in helping readers locate themselves in this altered geography.

Sprinkled with engrossing details, Rana Safvi’s “The Forgotten Cities of Delhi” explores the Capital’s layered past like a personal journey

From jinn mamu to the king of serpents, historian Rana Safvi’s book “The Forgotten Cities of Delhi” combines the real with the supernatural, taking its readers on a journey through the corridors of time. The sequel to her book “Where Stones Speak”, this book brings together riveting anecdotes with surprising facts about the nation’s capital and the many monuments dotting it— living witnesses to the interplay of light and shade across the city.

At a book reading session in Gurugram’s DLF Club 5, the author was in conversation with Asif Khan Dehlvi, founder of Delhi Karwan, and photographer Syed Mohammad Qasim whose evocative and imaginatively captured photograph became the cover of the book. Safvi regaled the audience with folklore and history from the pages of her book, such as the many names that Delhi was bestowed with. From Delu in 50 BC, it became Dhilli under the Tomars (after 700 AD), and later was reverentially referred to as Hazrat-e-Dehli, finally shortened to Dehli. It was only under the British that the city became ‘Delhi’, in accordance with the rules of the English language, where the letter ‘h’ cannot be placed before ‘l’. The word ‘Dehli’ itself carried a reference to the city being the ‘Dehleez of Hindustan’, or the threshold of India.

“The Forgotten Cities of Delhi” is sprinkled with myriad such engrossing details, in particular about the syncretism of the city — markedly visibly in the Indo-Islamic architecture. How many of us, for instance, know about the tomb that is decorated with Swastikas? The book uses four hitherto unexplored books as its sources, including two Urdu ones: Sir Syed’s “Asaar us Sanadeed” and Basheer ud Din Ahmed’s “Waqeyat-e-Dar ul Hukumat e Dehli”. The third is an out of print book which the author procured from the United States. “I’ve used these books along with my own experiences, plus more research,” says Safvi. But the defining part of the book is its style, which is akin to a personal journey.

Safvi narrates how a reader messaged her and said that reading the book was like taking a walk with her. Conducting heritage walks through the city is an art the author has mastered, and she makes a conscious attempt to write as if she were describing things during one of those walks, weaving in elements of the supernatural, such as jinns and fairies. One is reminded of the “City of Djinns” by Dalrymple, which has quite similar elements. But Safvi concurs, “He has written it from a very British point of view and a western sensibility. I am writing it as someone who’s steeped in this culture, who has spent her entire childhood listening to these tales. Mitti mein doobi hui hoon,” she emphasises.

Her book is connected to the mitti or earth in more ways than one. Her trips to the various de-listed monuments didn’t always present the prettiest of sights. The Zamarrudpur monuments, for instance. “That was the one most difficult to reach,” says Safvi. “We had to walk through narrow gullies and mounds of garbage, and one of them could only be reached through a lavatory. Also in Begumpur, there was so much filth because people used to come in the mornings to do their business. I had to throw away my shoes after I came back!” she exclaims. There’s also the tale of the man in Zamarrudpur who kept trying to keep her from taking photographs, and when she returned the next day, snapped at her with: “Aap phir aa gayin!”

The locals around these places are apprehensive of anyone trying to take photographs, for they fear that the authorities would demolish the numerous structures that have cropped up around them. Most of these monuments are de-listed though, and nothing can be done to conserve them. But public awareness is very important, says Safvi. At the very least, people need to be made aware of the presence of these receptacles of history in their midst. She also has an interesting and novel idea for the conservation of lesser known monuments: asking schools to adopt one of these.

“I talked to the principal of Vasant Valley. She said she wanted to adopt the Sultangarhi monument. They can then build programmes around it as well — quizzes, brochures, heritage walks. But ASI wasn’t ready for this.” Safvi explains, adding, “The only way forward for people to save these monuments is when they consider a sense of ownership. Apnepan ka ehsaas. For that we need children to get associated with it.”

But what significance does history have for a nation’s present and future generations? Is the past really important for those moving into the future, their sights set on the horizon? “These monuments and heritage are a living history,” emphasises Safvi. “If we do not appreciate and understand our living history we will continue to repeat the mistakes of the past.”

MORE LAYERS OF DELHI

Monday, 25 June 2018 | A Gupta

With her second book in Where Stones Speaktrilogy, Rana Safvi discovers some of the lesser known monuments of the city, says A Gupta

Have you ever been to or even heard of the Phuta Gumbad inside the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium? A structure built on a raised platform with arched niches in the interiors, kanguraengravings on the drum wall and lotus crest on the dome, it is one of the many forgotten monuments from the seven cities of Delhi, where as the saying goes, one would hit a monument every time one picked and threw a stone.

Rana Safvi, a historian, who has taken up the cudgels of making people aware of this and other beautiful monuments of a bygone era, is back with the second book of her Where Stones Speak trilogy. The book, titled The Forgotten Cities of Delhi, covers historical trails in Siri, Jahanpanah, Tughlaqabad, Firozabad, Din Panah, Shergarh and Hazrat Nizamuddin Basti.

The evening at Café Turtle, where the book was released, was made memorable with an interaction with the author and a Sufi performance. Rana answered the questions put forth to her with with such heartfelt emotions, that one could almost feel the author’s passion towards her work. Asif Khan Dehlvi, the founder of Delhi Karavan, added to the wonderful evening by sharing his experience and vast knowledge with the audience. Delhi Karavan plays a very important role in invoking a sense of passion and pride towards the rich heritage and culture of Delhi in people and has also helped Safvi from time to time since 2013 when they began their journey together.

“The thought that struck me was that the land of Mehrauli is the actual Delhi we keep talking about and we should make people aware of it. So, I decided to write about it. Although Gordon Risley Hearn had already written about it in his book, The Seven Cities of Delhi, that was from British perspective. I wanted to write with an Indian point of view,” emphasised Safvi. Her first book Where Stones Speak: Historical Trails in Mehrauli, The First City of Delhi was published in 2015 and was well-received. Despite that, she felt her work wasn’t over and so she decided to write two more books and make it a trilogy. “There are around 166 monuments in Delhi and over 15 monuments in Mehrauli itself and people are hardly aware of them. A trilogy wasn’t initially my plan but became one as I went with the flow,” she added. When asked about the challenges she faced while writing, she replied, “Oh, I faced a lot of challenges.

One of the biggest challenge was that sometimes the caretakers of monuments would not let me enter and would bluntly refuse to allow me from taking photographs.”

Rashmi Agarwal, a versatile and accomplished Indian singer, made the evening even more engaging and enjoyable with her qawwalis, The audience reaction said it all as many of then clapped and hummed along. This was one of the moments where one could use the Urdu phrase Mehfil jam gayi.

The final book of the trilogy will be out soon as Safvi said, “The book is 80 per cent ready. I usually write in summers and visit the monuments in winters and I still need to visit some of them for my third book.”

Author Rana Safvi talks to Medha Dutta about her new book The Forgotten Cities of Delhi—the second in the trilogy Where Stones Speak, based on Delhi.

Tell us about your book.
Many dynasties ruled Delhi and each of these dynasties either built a new capital city or expanded the existing one, giving Delhi a living history of over 1,500 years. Most of us don’t know about these cities as we see Delhi as just one contiguous whole.

What exactly is the ‘Ganga Jamuni Tehzeeb’?
With around roughly 4,500 communities in India, a constant interaction between them gave impetus to a unique composite culture called ‘Ganga Jamuni Tehzeeb’. The seeds were sown in ancient India with ‘Sarva Dharma Sambhava’, which literally means that all dharmas are equal. It is a continuous process of interchange, sharing and overlapping of cultural practices, without impinging or engulfing the other.

When did Rana, the scholar, become Rana, the writer?
Though I have been various things at various times, I was never a scholar. However, I have been a voracious reader since childhood and my knowledge base has helped me a great deal in my writing. I started writing by chance when Kunal Majumdar who was working for Tehelka in 2012 saw my tweets and invited me to write for them. There was no looking back after that.

You are not from Delhi originally, yet Delhi seems to be at the centre of your writings.
I had never ever imagined living here, let alone becoming its chronicler. Delhi kind of pulled me to it and I think the biggest hand in this is of Khwaja Qutbuddin Bakhtiyar Kaki, the saint whose shrine is in Mehrauli. Now I can’t imagine being away from it. Now, I’ve become a proper Dilliwaali!

Are we doing enough to conserve our heritage?
Unfortunately, no. I travel all over India and visit heritage monuments and I find that not enough is being done. The Archaeological Survey of India does not have the resources or manpower to really maintain all the heritage sites.

Your views on the ‘adoption’ of the Red Fort.
While it’s wonderful that we are giving over the maintenance of the iconic Red Fort to a private corporation and the tourists will get clean toilets, drinking water and cafeterias, we need to remember that tourists don’t come for these facilities alone, they come to see the monument. We should also make some long-term plans for conservation.
There are attempts to modify history today. Your views.
Different people may analyse history differently but events and their outcome cannot and should not be altered. That is a deliberate attempt at distortion and is fair to no one, especially our young students.

Your advice to the woman of today.
Just be yourself, follow your heart and don’t let anything bring you down. Also please remember, it’s never too late to start. I started my writing career at the age of 55.

You call yourself a chef-at-heart. What’s your favourite comfort food?
My comfort food is a rice dish called tahiri. It’s rice cooked with vegetables and turmeric. I associate it with my childhood. Shaljam achar and chutneys would accompany it.

Your favourite lines from his poetry?
Aur bhi dukh hain zamaane mein mohabbat ke siwa
Rahatein aur bhi hain wasl ki raahat ke siwa
Mujhse pehli si mohabbat mere mehboob na maang
(More suffering in the world than love, exists
More joy than the joy of union, exist
My love, don’t ask me for that love we shared once).

Rana Safvi’s book The Forgotten Cities of Delhi is a reminder of our composite culture, manifested in art, music, culture and architecture of the past 1,500 years

An outsider is out to reveal the hidden secrets of Delhi, with much success and in quicktime. Rana Safvi’s association with Delhi started only in 2012, when she came visiting her daughter. She went for one of the heritage walks with Asif Khan Dehlvi, whom she remembers as a great repository of stories. She was fascinated by the city and read three books on Delhi to satisfy her curiosity, two of which were in Urdu, all of them more than a hundred years old. These books portrayed a Delhi that doesn’t exist anymore.

She developed a spiritual connect with the city that’s difficult to describe in words. A year later, in 2013, she came back for good and settled in a flat in Greater Noida. Her first book was on Mehrauli and the inspiration came from the Qutub Sahib’s dargah. “Qutub Sahib pulled me into Delhi,” she says and concurs that her Delhi connection has Sufi origins. She never looked back.

Her latest book, The Forgotten Cities of Delhi, the second of the trilogy she plans on Delhi, talks about the 14 cities that flourished in Delhi, now in ruins, almost hidden in the concrete jungle we know. The characters of this books are the monuments. Since her childhood, Safvi has been fascinated by “ruins”. “I felt every stone has a story to tell me in my fanciful imagination. So many stories are hidden in these ruins,” she says. For sure, crumbling buildings from the past are mute witness to history, age gives them a certain character.

A prolific writer and blogger, Safvi started writing only when she turned 55 years of age, which coincides with her coming to Delhi. It was almost like a new life. “I started late and have to make up for the lost years,” she says, sipping cold coffee in an upmarket cafe. She calls Delhi her ‘karmabhumi’ though she’s a Lucknow girl, and has a little library in her Greater Noida apartment, where she lives with her father-in-law and daughter. Researching and writing has become integral to her life in Delhi, she does it three days of a week, religiously. Her husband, Gazanfar, is an NRI who visits regularly. Before settling down in Delhi, she lived for 15 years in Saudi Arabia, Oman, and Dubai and was a teacher.

The Forgotten Cities of Delhi covers 1,500 years in the life of Delhi, demolishes some popular myths in light of facts and is a must for those who want to know understand the complex city. For instance, Delhi moved south to north as it developed, shifting from Mehrauli towards Shahjahanabad. So, mind it, Delhi-6 is not the old Delhi, but is fairly recent, and south Delhi is actually the oldest part. The Lodhi and the Khilji dynasties were responsible for the culmination of Islamic geometric art with that of Indian motifs. The most commonly used motives were lotus (which is the party symbol of the BJP) and ‘kalash’ or the earthen pot. Khiljis and Lodis started the Indo-Persian style of architecture that was perfected by the Mughals.

The Lodis were prolific builders; three of the dynasty’s rulers build some 100 tombs. Tombs were available to those who could buy them, not just a privilege of the ruling class. Due to an abrupt end of the dynasty, many of the tombs have no one buried in them. Lodi Garden, where the rich and mighty go walking, was called the Bagh-e-Jadd for a long time, was actually an enormous burial ground that extended up till Chirag Delhi. Jorbagh was actually ‘Joru-ka-bagh’ or wife’s garden, as it was the estate of Nawab Qudsia Begum, wife of emperor Mohammad Shah (1717-48 AD). That’s what her research shows, though some historians don’t agree.

By early nineteenth century, Delhi was a city of ruins, as described by English traveller and the Bishop of Calcutta, Bishop Heber, ‘awful scenes of desolation, ruins after ruins, tombs after tombs…scattered over a soil naturally rocky and barren, without cultivation, except in one or two small spots, and without a single tree.’ Unlike popular belief, it was not the Mughals, but the English who destroyed many of the monuments. Mughal architecture was actually a victim. In the early twentieth century, Lutyens Delhi was built on the ruins of Lodi edifices, confirms Safvi, that include tombs, graves, pavilions, well and mansions. Railway lines in Delhi were laid demolishing the hundreds of structures, like the tomb of Zeb-un-Nisa who was a daughter of Aurangzeb. “It’s a great pity that in the aftermath of the 1857 uprising, lot of our national treasure was taken to the museums of the West, particularly Britain. Now if one has to study about Delhi, has to depend on western archives and sources,” Safvi says with a sense of irony.

Many of the professional historians in the academic world remind her that she isn’t qualified enough to channelize her passion into writing. “Because I’m not a PhD,” she says. Shamsur Rahman Faruqui, renowned poet and Urdu critic, advised her there’s no need for a PhD for writing books. “A book is like a PhD thesis,” she says and smiles. She’s a popular online figure, her blogs don’t just talk about monuments, but Sufism, music and cuisine. She highlights Ganga-Jamuni tehzeeb, composite culture. She is trolled on social networking sites because she talks of peace and coexistence amongst communities.

Undeterred, Safvi continues to document her fascination and love for the city of Delhi. It’s not easy, mostly she’s alone, trying to reach every nook and corner, to rediscover hidden jewels of the past, in ruins. She’s working on three books, regularly contributes to the leading dailies and news portals. Her insatiable urge to rediscover Delhi’s past will play an important role in shaping its future.

It was called Qila Qadam Sharif with a fortified wall, bastions & grand gateways. Now just another neglected and rundown basti

Firoz Shah Tughlaq ‘s memorial (grave) for his son Fath Khan. So called because of an imprint of the Prophet ‘s foot buried with him as per his request.

The descriptions given of it in Dargah Quli Khan ‘s Muraqqa e Dehli show you a vibrant bustling place where kings, Queens and prince and princesses come to ask for boons and joined commoners who came to ask for theirs.

The Basant celebrations started from this Dargah.

Alas it’s all a far off dream now.
