Modhera Sun Temple

It’s quite a glorious monument and one of the finest in Western India.

The temple consists of two separate blocks of buildings the Sabha mandapa and garbha griha and a water reservoir or Suraj Kund.

The whole masonry is based on interlocking system without cementing material.

The temple was constructed about the 11th Century A. D, under the Solankis.

There are 12 images of the sun God Surya inside the main shrine on the corners and sides, 52 pillars.

The main shrine is kept locked and no longer has any image. During the summer solstice and solar equinox the rays of the sun fell on it.

The temple lies on the tropic of cancer

It’s very intricately carved.

For more details there’s a video of the guide explaining it.
