Sujata Temple, Bakraur, Bodh Gaya

Prince Siddhartha left home as a young man in search of truth.

He experimented with various things including severe self mortification and penance before reaching enlightenment.

One of these was a period of penance for several years in the Mahakala Caves.

Where he almost died had it not been for the rice porridge or Kheer fed to him by a lady named Sujata from a nearby village.

A temple has been dedicated to her in the village which depicts the story

There are various tableaus depicting the story in the temple.

She found him sitting in an emaciated state under a peepal tree and fed him, thereby saving his life.

Another Tableau describing the story.

The peepal tree under which she offered the Kheer is an important theme.
