2. pahle se maraasim na sahii phir bhii kabhii tau.
rasm-o-rahe duniyaa hii niibhaane ke liye aa

maraasim मरासिम مراسم relationship,affinity , mutual agreement & understanding
rasm-o-rah-e-duniyaa रस्म-ओ-रह-ए-दुनिया رسم و رہ دنیا customs and traditions of the society

2.We may no longer have the same easy understanding of each other
Please come,even if it to appease society by once again appearing together

3. kis kis ko bataayenge judaa_ii kaa sabab ham,
tuu mujh se Khafaa hai to zamaane ke liye aa

judaaii जुदाई جدائی separation, absence
sabab सबब سبب cause,reason,

3. To how many can we explain the reasons for our separation
You are angry with me, come so we needn’t divulge to the world our reason

4. kuchh to mere pindaar-e-muhabbat ka bharam rakh ,
tuu bhii to kabhii mujh ko manaane ke liye aa
pindaar ,پندا पिन्दार = pride
pindaar e mohabbat – pride in our love
bharam भरम بھرم reputation,esteem,trust,secret

4. Keep alive my faith and pride in our love
for once, Please come to persuade me, my love

5. Ek umr se huu.N lazzat-e-giriyaa se bhii maharuum
ai raahat-e-jaaN mujh ko rulaane ke liye aa

lazzat-e-girya लज़्ज़त-ए-गिर्या لذت گریہ = taste, joy of crying
mahruum महरूम محروم = deprived of
raahat-e-jaan राहत-ए-जाँ راحت جاں = One who gives peace to me , my heart

5. An age it seems that I have been deprived of the joy of tears
Oh One who gives me peace Please come and release the floodgate of tears

6. ab tak dil-e-Khush_faham ko tujh se hain ummiiden ,
ye aaKhirii shammen bhii bujhaane ke liye aa

dil-e-KHush-fahm दिल-ए-ख़ुश-फ़हम دل خوش فہم optimistic heart
( Misconceived optimism )

6. Even now my misguided heart is full of optimism
Please come to blow out this last flame of hope

Though the ashaar are written by Talib Baghpati, Mehdi Hassan

maanaa ki muhabbat kaa chhipaanaa hai muhabbat
chupake se kisii roz jataane ke liye aa

piirii पीरी پیری old age,
muu.nd मूँद موند close

2. Youth we spent shedding tears; in old age we closed our eyes /
that is, at night we were very wakeful; when morning came, we rested

3. naahaq ham majburon par tohmat hai mukhtaari ki /
chaahte hain so ap kare hain, hamko abas badnaam kiya

naa-haq ना-हक़ ناحق unjust, improper, wrong, improperly
tohmat तोहमत تہمت Allegation,Accuse false accusation,suspicion of guilt

muKHtaarii मुख़्तारी مختاری independence,power,authority
abas अब्स عبث Futile,Profitless,Purposeless,Trifling uselessly,absurdly’

3. unjust is this allegation of independence against us oppressed ones /whatever you want, you do; you’ve frivolously defamed us

4. kis kaa kaaba kaisaa qiblah kaun haram hai kyaa ahraam
kuuche ke us ke baashindoN ne sab ko yahiN se salaam kiyaa

ehraam अहराम احرام = Holy clothing white vest worn during Hajj
baashindon बाशिंदों باشندوں = natives
kuuche कूचे کوچے = narrow street, lane

4. What Kaaba, what qiblah, what mecca masjid and its pilgrimage?
the residents of her street made a greeting to everyone from right here

5. yaan k safed-o-syaah main hamko dakhal jo hai so itana hai
raat ko ro-ro subah kiya, din ko jyon-tyon shaam kiya

5. the only access to the white-and-black of here, is that:

6. ‘Mir’ k deen-o-mazhab ko ab puchte kya ho un ne to
qashqa khaincha, dair main baitha, kab ka tark islam kiya

qashqaa क़श्क़ा قشقہ = a mark made by Hindus on their forehead
dair दैर دیر = a temple
tark तर्क ترک = abandonment, desertion, abdication,relinquishment

Put on a tilak on his forehead, sat down in a temple– it’s been ages since he renounced Islam!
