      Ulti ho gayi sab tadbeere’n

      1. ulti ho ga’een sab tadabire’n, kuch na dawa ne kaam kiya //
      dekha is bimaari-e-dil ne aakhir kaam tamaam kiya

      In the first verse the play is on the word ‘Kaam” 
      = Action, act, deed, work, doing, handiwork, performance; work, labour, duty, task, job

      kaam in ‘(Sanskrit) Inclination, wish, desire, longing, inordinate desire

      kaam in ‘(Persian) Desire, wish; design, intention; –the palate’.

      tadbiiren तदबीरें تدبیریں solutions, arrangements , plan. Forethought, judgment; deliberation, counsel; opinion, expedient, contrivance

      tamaam तमाम گرمجوش finish
      tamaam karnaa : ‘To perfect; to complete, finish, end, conclude, bring to a close

      1. all plans were overturned; medicine didn’t do any work //
      See! this sickness of heart finally finished me off

      2. ahd-e-jawaani ro-ro kaata, piiri main liin aankhen mund//
      yaani raat bahot thay jaage subah huyi aaraam kiya

      ahd-e-javaanii अहद-ए-जवानी عہد جوانی time/age of youth,
      piirii पीरी پیری old age,
      muu.nd मूँद موند close

      2. Youth we spent shedding tears; in old age we closed our eyes /
      that is, at night we were very wakeful; when morning came, we rested

      3. naahaq ham majburon par tohmat hai mukhtaari ki /
      chaahte hain so ap kare hain, hamko abas badnaam kiya

      naa-haq ना-हक़ ناحق unjust, improper, wrong, improperly
      tohmat तोहमत تہمت Allegation,Accuse false accusation,suspicion of guilt

      muKHtaarii मुख़्तारी مختاری independence,power,authority
      abas अब्स عبث Futile,Profitless,Purposeless,Trifling uselessly,absurdly’

      3. unjust is this allegation of independence against us oppressed ones /whatever you want, you do; you’ve frivolously defamed us

      4. kis kaa kaaba kaisaa qiblah kaun haram hai kyaa ahraam
      kuuche ke us ke baashindoN ne sab ko yahiN se salaam kiyaa

      ehraam अहराम احرام = Holy clothing white vest worn during Hajj
      baashindon बाशिंदों باشندوں = natives
      kuuche कूचे کوچے = narrow street, lane

      4. What Kaaba, what qiblah, what mecca masjid and its pilgrimage?
      the residents of her street made a greeting to everyone from right here

      5. yaan k safed-o-syaah main hamko dakhal jo hai so itana hai
      raat ko ro-ro subah kiya, din ko jyon-tyon shaam kiya

      5. the only access to the white-and-black of here, is that:
      Weeping copiously we survived from night into morning and cried through the day

      6. ‘Mir’ k deen-o-mazhab ko ab puchte kya ho un ne to
      qashqa khaincha, dair main baitha, kab ka tark islam kiya

      qashqaa क़श्क़ा قشقہ = a mark made by Hindus on their forehead
      dair दैर دیر = a temple
      tark तर्क ترک = abandonment, desertion, abdication,relinquishment

      6. Why are you asking now about Mir’s religion? After all, he
      Put on a tilak on his forehead, sat down in a temple– it’s been ages since he renounced Islam!
