The Qalam and Takhti on cenotaphs

You will see two types of cenotaphs in old Muslim cemeteries.
A cenotaph is a solid structure over the earthen grave, which would be underground and denotes the position.
The cenotaph with a raised portion in the middle is called qalam and signifies that a male is buried there. The flat is called takhti and denotes a female is buried here

For those asking I don’t know why the two symbols are chosen for cenotaph.
It’s on cenotaphs not ordinary graves with earthen middle.
Also not on all cenotaphs
