Te first thing that struck me about
Matthias Church on top of the hill where Buda castle Hill is located were its pretty multi coloured tiles contrasting with its very Gothic spires.
It is one of the finest churches in Budapest, and the most unique churches in Europe.
Its foundation was laid by the first Hungarian king, St Stephen in 1015 called Church of Mary.
it served as the coronation church of the Kings.
Originally owned by Franciscans, Jesuits, it became a Catholic church in 1242 .
Instead of St Matthias, the name of the church refers to King Matthias Corvinus the Fair, who remodelled and expanded the building in Gothic style in the 15th century, adding the southern high tower, called Matthias bell tower.
It was converted briefly to a mosque under the Ottomons in 1526.
When the Christian mercenary troops led by Charles V, Karl V. Leopold imperial generalissimo regained the Buda Castle from the Turks, in 1686 a new church was constructed in Baroque style.
The interior is dark and calm and is painted with orange, brown, golden hewed frescos reaching from floor to ceiling, beautiful stain glass windows, far reaching arches, century old wooden pews, medieval remnants.
The centre piece of the altar is a delicate image of Mother Mary and it is officially called the Church of Our Lady
